SALT LAKE CITY — Rep. John Curtis has earned support from a former colleague in his race for the Senate, announcing an endorsement from former Rep. Chris Stewart on Thursday.

Stewart and Curtis served alongside each other in Congress from 2017 until Stewart stepped down last year. In a statement issued by Curtis' campaign, Stewart praised the congressman as a "proven leader who consistently puts the needs of Utahns first."

"I've had the privilege of working alongside John in Congress, and I can attest to his integrity, his work ethic, and his unwavering commitment to our state," Stewart stated. "He is simply one of the finest leaders I have ever known, and I've had the opportunity to work with some of the strongest leaders in our country. Utah needs a senator who will fight for our values, and I know that John Curtis is the right person for the job. John will join with other conservative members of the Senate and work with President Trump — focusing on issues that are best for Utah."

When Stewart left Congress, he was the longest-serving member of Utah's House delegation, and served on powerful committees in Washington, including the House Intelligence Committee and House Appropriations Committee.

Curtis said he was "deeply honored" by the endorsement from Stewart, who he called a "steadfast advocate for Utah."

Curtis is one of several Republican candidates seeking the Senate seat currently filled by Sen. Mitt Romney. He opted to collect signatures to qualify for the GOP primary, and is one of three candidates — along with former Utah House Speaker Brad Wilson and businessman Jason Walton — to have qualified for the primary, according to the Utah Elections Office.
