SALT LAKE CITY — A federal jury has indicted a West Jordan woman on drug charges accusing her of possessing nearly 12,000 fentanyl pills.

According to the District of Utah Attorney's Office, Martha Isela Navarro Chapas, 31, of West Jordan, was indicted on charges of drug possession and intention to distribute large amounts of narcotics including heroin, methamphetamine and 11,700 fentanyl pills. The office said Chapas is a "foreign national living in Utah."

Federal agents from the Wasatch Metro Drug Task Force arrested Chapas on March 21, according to court documents, and seized more than 23 grams of fentanyl pills, 2.05 grams of cocaine and $1,318 that was on her person during the arrest.

During an interview, police said Chapas admitted to distributing narcotics to customers for cash and having narcotics and cash at two homes.

After the arrest, agents conducted two searches at residences in West Jordan associated with Chapas.

At the first residence, agents seized 2,287 grams of methamphetamine, 953 grams of fentanyl — which equated about 9,500 pills — and 417 grams of heroin from Chapas' bedroom, according to prosecutors. Police said Chapas pointed out the location of the narcotics for agents during the search.

The search at the second residence yielded 219 grams of fentanyl pills, or about 2,200 pills, and $25,598, prosecutors said.

The attorney's office said Chapas' arrest is part of an investigation into a drug trafficking organization.
