Tom Cruise has a need, a need for speed. Nearly two years after the release of "Top Gun: Maverick," it has been announced that Cruise will return for a third flight.

First reported by Puck, Ehren Kruger, the co-writer of "Maverick," will work on a script for the third "Top Gun." Paramount is reportedly working on getting Joseph Kosinski to return as director.

The first "Top Gun" was released in 1986 and it took over 30 years to get the franchise back in the sky. Cruise has reported it took so long to get back to the franchise because he was waiting for the right story to tell. It finally came in the form of "Maverick." Sounds like it won't be another three decades before they find the right story for No. 3.

"Top Gun: Maverick" was a massive hit, making nearly $1.5 billion at the global box office — solidifying it as Cruise's most successful film. The movie was also a big hit with critics, scoring a 96% on Rotten Tomatoes and earning an Academy Award nomination for best picture.

Other than Cruise and screenwriter Kruger being attached, there are no other official additions to the project. Some characters will likely return, like Miles Teller's Rooster and Jennifer Connelly's Penny. Along with Kruger, it is a possibility that Cruise's frequent collaborator Christopher McQuarrie could join the production as well. McQuarrie has written and directed the last three "Mission: Impossible" films and is finishing "Dead Reckoning Part 2." McQuarrie has a writing credit on "Maverick."

Paramount has not commented on the news, and there is no timetable for when Cruise will return to the danger zone. Considering the massive success of "Maverick," one would assume the production company will make this new movie a top priority.
