CEDAR CITY — Mindy Savage dropped off $1,000 worth of socks to the local women's crisis center last week, in memory of her late husband Trevor Savage who had an affinity for a new pair of socks.

Mindy and Trevor Savage had been high school sweethearts and were married for 18 years with four children when he unexpectedly passed away on Aug. 8, 2016. It was the following December when Mindy Savage decided she was going to find a way to share love in her husband's memory.

"Trevor loves new socks, and one of the things that he would often say was that if he was a rich man, he'd wear a brand new pair of socks every day," Savage said. "With his passing, I thought it would be a nice way to keep his memory alive by donating socks during December on his birthday and do something nice for less-fortunate people in the cold winter months."

Amid her grief as a newly single mom, Savage organized a sock donation, and it was a huge success.

"The first year we did it, we had like a huge turnout because he had just passed away in August, and we were still kind of on everybody's radar," she said. "The next year wasn't as successful, and the third year, I just didn't have the time and energy for it and decided not to do it."

That third year, people donated socks anyway, and Savage said it was at that point she realized she needed to keep doing it. It was also around that time when she learned socks were one of the most needed items at shelters, and she knew she needed to continue.

Savage is now in her eighth season of donating socks in an event that she now calls "Socks for Trev," and she said this year, the program has seen a lot more growth.

"It's definitely picked back up again," she said, "I'd say I have about $ 1,000 worth of socks, and I'm taking several big garbage sacks to the women's crisis shelter and two to three big garbage sacks to the Iron County Care and Share."

"People I don't even know will Venmo me because I have so many people that'll share the post on Facebook with their family and friends," she continued. "I just go and do a big shopping spree with my kids and I try to get socks for everyone from baby to adult, so that everybody who needs them when they're in that shelter can have the opportunity to get a bag of new socks."

Savage collects donations and socks from Thanksgiving until Trevor's birthday on Dec. 16. She said she is happy to continue to collect donations to purchase socks on her Venmo @mindy-savage, but she encourages anyone who can to donate to their local shelters.
