Willy Wonka and I have always had an interesting relationship. As a kid, I watched Gene Wilder's version countless times. Even though I watched it repeatedly, I can't say I liked it that much. There were elements I adored, but other things I didn't care for.

Then Tim Burton came along and gave us a version with Johnny Depp as Mr. Wonka, which never sat quite right. I didn't hate it, but it didn't work for me.

It wasn't until I read the book with my kids a few years ago that I fell in love with the story and the character. Fast forward to December 2023, and we have "Wonka," the origin story of the famed chocolatier. As you can imagine, this movie has been met with some trepidation. I believe the hesitancy is due to many of you having a relationship with Willy Wonka similar to that of mine. I'm here to let you know you can lay that uneasiness aside.

"Wonka" is a delightful leap into the world of Roald Dahl, and here are a few reasons why I liked it so much.

It's a whimsical good time

"Wonka" is a visual feast, embracing a whimsical and vibrant atmosphere that brings Roald Dahl's world to life in a dazzling spectacle. The film is a kaleidoscope of bright colors, adorned with catchy songs to add to its charm. The engrossing sets and costumes create a magical backdrop, making it a delightful and visually stunning experience.

I want to watch the film at home to pause it and take in all the sets and architecture. There is often a fine line between weird, quirky and whimsical. "Wonka" doesn't toe it but manages to stay in the whimsical, and that's precisely what this film needed.

The actors are having a good time and it shows

One of the film's strengths lies in the infectious energy of its cast. Each actor appears to revel in his/her role, contributing to the overall enjoyment of the story. This collective enthusiasm translates on screen, making it easy for the audience to lose themselves in the captivating performances. The genuine joy of the actors adds an extra layer of delight to the movie, making it a joyous experience for viewers.

Gene Wilder will always be the iconic Wonka; Timothée Chalamet is fantastic in the role and brings an innocence and empathy missing in some of the other iterations. Keegan-Michael Key is also a bright spot, as always. I call out these two, but it feels like everyone was having a great time, and that joy comes across in the performances.

It captures Roald Dahl's imagination

"Wonka" pays homage to Roald Dahl's legacy and captures the essence of his vivid imagination. While many films have adapted Dahl's stories, "Wonka" stands out as a testament to the directorial prowess of Paul King. Known for his work on the beloved "Paddington" films, King brings his charm and creativity to "Wonka," creating a world that would undoubtedly make Dahl proud.

The film may not be a direct adaptation, but encapsulates Dahl's whimsical spirit and fantastical storytelling. While I think there are some great adaptations of Dahl's brilliant works, I believe "Wonka" captures the master storyteller's vision and imagination better than any of its predecessors.

It's a feel-good movie

In an era where feel-good movies are rare, "Wonka" fills this void with its delightful narrative. The film doesn't aspire to be anything more than a fun and heartwarming trip to the movies. Its ability to deliver a genuine feel-good experience makes it a perfect fit for Christmas, even if it's not a traditional holiday film.

"Wonka" offers a refreshing and uplifting cinematic journey, providing the audience with a much-needed dose of joy and positivity.

Conclusion

I don't know that everyone will enjoy "Wonka" as much as I did. Still, the whimsical musical captivated me from start to finish. I'm looking forward to seeing it again with my family.

I took my 7-year-old daughter to the screening, and I think her simple review is the best way to sum up "Wonka." As we walked out of the theater, I asked her what she thought. She looked at me with her big, blue eyes and said, "It was wondrous."

"Wonka" is wondrous and a great movie to enjoy with your family this Christmas.

"Wonka" is officially rated PG for some violence, mild language and thematic elements.
