SOUTH JORDAN — Chills were felt all around on Oct. 24 at Bingham High School when 41-year-old Melissa Lambson stood up prior to her daughter's volleyball game; a game that would determine the team's entrance into the state playoffs.
Lambson, who played volleyball at Utah Valley University, was there to support and cheer for her daughter. Part of that support included her own rendition of "The Star-Spangled Banner" that brought several audible reactions from the crowd.
Initially, the arena was silent, as listeners hung on Lambson's every note — until she made a run for it in perfect B-flat-minor key following "O say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave."
A large choir of "oohs" and "wows," and a few whistles were heard as spectators could no longer hold in their response to Lambson's voice.
Then came the finale.
"O'er the land of the free (insert falsetto here)."
The crowd goes wild — except the three kids behind her in the stands, who stood with hands over heart, captivated by her ability to hit the high note.
And then the crowd went wild, again, as Lambson brought "the home of the brave" all the way home.
Full disclosure: I went to high school with Lambson, and was privy to her unmatched vocals, as she often sang at sporting events in which she also participated. The last time I heard her sing was at senior night in the year 2000, alongside Mauli Bonner, who is part of the well-known Bonner family. You can imagine the epic performance that resulted.
After 20 years, when I saw her post on her private social media account — with only 80 views — I knew the world needed to hear her voice. She has since made a public account for this very occasion.
