SALT LAKE CITY — A woman died Wednesday night after a hit-and-run crash in Salt Lake City, police said.

Witnesses reported the crash at 700 S. State Street at 7:48 p.m., Salt Lake City police said in a news release. The driver did not stop after hitting the woman and continued "in an unknown direction."

A police sergeant assigned to the area quickly responded, according to the release. The sergeant found community members attempting lifesaving measures on the woman, who was described as in her 40s. She died while being transported in an ambulance to the hospital, police said.

Police added that there were multiple witnesses to the crash. Investigators were working to get a description of the driver and the car that hit the woman.

Northbound traffic on State Street is being diverted either east or west, police said, adding that additional road closures may be necessary.

Anyone with information about the crash is asked to call 801-799-3000.
