ST. GEORGE — A man was shot and killed by police near the Utah-Arizona border Wednesday, after police say officers responded to a report of a man "acting erratically and brandishing a weapon."

A call came in to the Utah Highway Patrol at 7:21 a.m., saying there was a suspicious vehicle at the port of entry, near the state line on northbound I-15, St. George police said in a statement. When troopers arrived at 7:38 a.m., they found a man "acting erratically and brandishing a weapon."

Police said the troopers then set up containment positions and requested backup from other agencies, including St. George police, as well as crisis negotiators.

"Despite officers' efforts to deescalate this incident, the male was shot by an officer and died at the scene," police said. They did not say what prompted the officer to shoot the man, nor did they say which agency the officer was with.

The St. George News reported that shots were fired around 8:40 a.m., about an hour after troopers arrived from Utah and Arizona.

The Washington County Critical Incident Task Force will be investigating the police shooting. The man's identity has not yet been released.
