RIVERTON — A mother and her young son were critically injured after a car ran a red light and hit them in Riverton on Sunday night, police said.

A vehicle was eastbound on 13400 South when it ran the red light at the intersection with Mountain View Corridor and collided with a northbound vehicle, police said.

The northbound vehicle then "careened" into three other vehicles that were stopped at the red light to go westbound.

A 6-year-old boy in the northbound car was flown to a hospital, and his mother, 40, was also taken to a hospital by ambulance, police said.

The mother and child were both in critical condition, according to police.

Other people involved in the crash sustained "relatively minor" injuries, Hutson said.

Hutson said impairment isn't a suspected factor in the crash.

Police closed the area to traffic for several hours while they investigated the incident.

Correction: Police initially said it was a girl who was injured, but family clarified it was a boy.
