HERRIMAN — When Corner Canyon took the field Saturday afternoon, they wanted to put the pedal to the metal and not look back.

That's exactly what happened when Jon King scored the first point of the game in just twenty seconds. The Chargers scored again almost a half a minute later, then a third time before a minute and a half had passed in the game.

Corner Canyon scored 9 points in the first quarter and went on to win 15-10. They led the entirety of the game.

"We knew we were going to go as hard as we could as soon as we got out there," King said. "The way we look at it, we go out there and punch everyone in the mouth as soon as we step out on the field. That's what we did in the first five minutes of the game."

Corner Canyon was ranked as the No. 1 team in the state of Utah, and No. 18 in the United States by maxpreps.com. That's a lot of weight on the shoulders of head coach Aaron Ika.

"My biggest feeling when that final whistle blew was relief," Ika said with a chuckle. "I coach a team with bonafide All-Americans, and it was my job to not get in their way and to give them the right tools to be successful."

The Chargers led 10-3 at the half, but American Fork was not going to roll over and forfeit the match. They made it to the championship for a reason, after all.

The Cavemen roared out of halftime and put on a performance that mirrored Corner Canyon's at the beginning of the game. Three quick American Fork goals came within the first three minutes; and all of a sudden it was a game again. The Chargers had to find a way to stop the bleeding before their lead slipped any further.

"We just had to believe one another," King said. "Not really anything else to it. We just had to trust each other, know that we are better than who we are playing, and not let the pressure get to us. We just went out there and played our game."

King led the way with three of his team's 15 points, with a total of seven players landing in the scorer's column. Blaze DeGracie and Jacob Osborn each scored three times, as well.
