IMF HQ — Tom Cruise is flying back into theaters this week with the long-awaited sequel "Top Gun: Maverick."

And, if you're worried the world's biggest action star was getting ready to call it quits after another round in his jet fighter, don't be. The first trailer for "Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One" is now available.

This is the seventh time Cruise will play the part of Ethan Hunt — a role that, for my money, has turned out to be part of one of the best and most fun movie series in the past decade.

After a slip-up with the second film, the "Mission: Impossible" franchise has been strong since 2006's "Mission: Impossible III" and has just continued to gain momentum.

Academy Award-winning writer and director Christopher McQuarrie is back for his third M:I movie. McQuarrie wrote and directed "Rogue Nation" and "Fallout," as well as this new M:I film and it's sequel, "Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two."

The new trailer doesn't give us much when it comes to plot, but it does show us some returning characters and some new faces. In addition to Cruise, Rebecca Ferguson, Simon Pegg, Vanessa Kirby and Ving Rhames are back. Another familiar face is one we haven't seen since the first "Mission: Impossible" in 1996. Henry Czerny has a significant role in the trailer and fans will recognize him as the untrustworthy Eugene Kittridge from the first film.

New additions to the franchise we see in the trailer include Esai Morales, Shea Whigham, Pom Klementieff and Hayley Atwell. Also joining the cast for this new adventure, but not appearing in the trailer, are Indira Varma, Rob Delaney and Cary Elwes.

It's no wonder plot details are being kept quiet, as both Cruise and McQuarrie have made a point to keep audiences in the dark as long as possible with these films, and I love it. These movies always have amazing surprises, and I can't wait to see what "Dead Reckoning Part One" has in store.

We know there will be plenty of action and incredible stunts, including Cruise driving a motorcycle off a cliff. And since it is Cruise, I think we can confidently assume he actually did that stunt.

This seventh installment is due in theaters on July 14, 2023 — that's right, more than a year away. The film and "Dead Reckoning Part Two" were shot back-to-back, and the second half is due in the theaters the following summer in 2024.

As a self-proclaimed fan of the series, it's going to be tough for me to wait an entire year to get this movie, as well as two years to see the conclusion — but I'm looking forward to it.

What are your thoughts on the first trailer for "Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One" and on the M:I franchise as a whole?
