PROVO — Don't feel too bad for Corner Canyon sprinter Cody Hagen.

After finishing third in his first event of Saturday's 6A state track and field championships, the Charger senior went on to win two more.

Turns out, a split-second loss in a breakneck 100-meter dash may have been the best thing to happen to him all day. And it was all worth it in the end, as Hagen picked up two more gold medals and Corner Canyon blazed to a third-consecutive state title Saturday at Clarence F. Robison Track Complex at BYU.

"I was so mad after that (first) one," said Hagen, who has signed to play football for the Cougars. "I felt good, and they all ran a great race while I had a bad start.

"But I talked to coach (Eric) Kjar, my coaches, my dad, they all helped me realize that this was my last race. Just because I didn't run well in the 100 — it sucked to do it at state — but to have another 200 to run pushed me to win it and get revenge."

With the motivation of a champion, Hagen pulled away from Roy's Parker Kingston in the final few meters to clinch the 200-meter title in 20.97 seconds. He also faced down challenges from Syracuse, Bingham and Layton to win the 400-meter relay, punctuating his final high school track meet with gusto for what he admitted was the favorite race of his senior season that started eight-weeks late after offseason surgery.

"It was completely mental for me to go out there," Hagen said. "I was trying so hard, and Parker and Smith (Snowden from Skyridge) to push me, it made it a lot easier. That 200 was great."

Of course, that first race may have been the fastest collective sprint in Utah high school history. If not, it's certainly close.

Seven sprinters finished in 11.00 seconds or less Saturday, led by another BYU football signee in Kingston. The senior from Roy posted a 10.53 that ranks third all-time, according to the UHSAA record book, but he got there in a photo-finish tiebreaker.

Kingston initially posted 10.54, matching Skyridge star Smith Snowden, before video review. That dropped the Roy speedster to 10.533 and Snowden, who recently returned from a recruiting visit with Northwestern football, to 10.535.

"It was so much fun running in that," said Snowden, a junior with offers from BYU, Utah and several others. "I felt it coming in from last year, knowing everyone was going to get faster. I knew it would be a good race.

"It was nerve-wracking, but it ended well. … I didn't feel that good with my start, but was able to make up that speed and then jump at the last second. I could see Parker next to me, and I knew I had to dig deep and gut it out."

Hagen, who set last year's 6A record of 10.52 in the same event, finished third in 10.62. The future BYU wide receiver's record mark is second only to Murray's Brian Hazelgren, who posted 10.47 in 1981.

Bingham's Cody Hone was fourth in 10.72, and Layton's Nick Sanders fifth in 10.91 — in all, seven runners ran 11.00 or better in Saturday's final.

"Standing over the blocks, I got the jitters. They were saying this could be a state-record meet for the field," said Kingston, who also plans to run track for the Cougars. "And I think it was, with seven people going under 11 like that. It's just nuts.

"I don't have words, but it's crazy."

Not to be outdone, Hagen pulled away for the 200-meter title, clinching his second-straight individual championship in the event with a 6A-record time of 20.97. The time is just .01 seconds off the all-time record set by 4A Pine View's Dominique McKenzie last year.

McKenzie's twin brother Marcus, a senior with the Panthers, won the 4A 100-meter title in 10.67. Both brothers have signed to play football at BYU.

Just a few months from departing on a two-year mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Hagen also anchored the Chargers' title-winning 4x100-meter relay team, finishing in 41.65 with teammates Aiden MacDonald, Tre Kofe and Cody Strong as the Chargers rolled to a third consecutive state title.

In the 6A girls race, Taylor Rohatinsky picked up a pair of win to help Lone Peak win its fourth championship since 2018, and sixth overall.

Rohatinsky secured the distance double, overcoming a sluggish start in the morning to win the 1,600-meter race by a full second in 4:49.16. The BYU-bound senior then ran a personal-best 2:10.65 — improving her own 6A record by two seconds — to secure the Knights' fourth-consecutive season with a title.

"I was going for that record, but we came across our first 400 about three seconds slower than I needed to," Rohatinsky said. "At that point, I was going to gradually increase it and just go for the win.

"I think it's definitely been a positive meet. You can always do more, but you also need to take some pride in what you accomplished. It's cool, to realize there are some steps in the process and to get excited for the process."

Fremont star Amare Gardner added to her haul from Thursday's long jump championship with two more Saturday. The junior improved on her 6A record with a 23.83 in the 200-meter final, a few hours after wrapping up the 100-meter title in 11.81.
