PROVO — Collin Szymanski took first in the discus with a winning throw of 145 feet, 2.5 inches, and Madi Orton added a title-clinching jump of 5 feet, 3 inches in the high jump to help Kanab to the early lead in both the 2A boys and girls state track and field meet Friday at BYU.
Kanab's boys took a 1-point lead over Millard with 35 points, followed by Beaver, South Sevier and North Sevier.
The Cowboys' girls team posted 35 points on the first day for a 3-point lead of Millard. Beaver, North Summit and North Sevier round out the top five.
In the 1A boys meet, Bryce Valley got first-place finishes from Brock Syrett in the 3,200-meter run and the medley relay team to take a 6-point lead over Panguitch. Milford, Monticello and Tabiona rounded out the top five.
Adelaid Englestead's first-place finish in the 3,200-meter run paced Panguitch to 49 points and a 14-point lead over Milford in the 1A girls meet. Monticello, Escalante and Bryce Valley round out the top five.
