PROVO — It was lightly snowing as Desert Hills senior Brooks Barney made his way around the track early on Friday.
The unseasonable low temperatures at the Utah high school track and field championship at BYU Friday didn't slow down the boys from Southern Utah.
Barney paced a Thunder onslaught in the 4A competition's opening race. Barney finished first in the 3200-meter run and was soon followed by four of his teammates as Desert Hills claimed four of the top five positions in the race. The clean sweep was only broken up by Cedar's Logan Peel, who finished second.
The 3200-meter dominance pushed the Thunder boys out to a big lead heading into Saturday's final day of competition. Desert Hills finished Friday with 47 points, which is 18 points ahead of second-place Cedar.
Tyson Parker won the long jump for Desert Hills, edging out Sky View's Brevin Egbert.
On the girls side, Cedar jumped out to the lead due to high finishes by Carissa Hofelin in the 3200-meter run and Ella Fielding in the shot put. The Lady Reds also ran away from the field to win the 4x800 relay by over seven seconds.
In 3A, the Ogden boys got out to the lead Friday behind Jake Peterson's winning run in the 3200-meters race.
Delta's Saylor Day pushed the Rabbits out in front on the girls side. She finished second to Juan Diego's Emmalyn Jacobs in the javelin, and then coupled with teammate Emmie Willoughby for a two-three finish in the shot put.
