PROVO — Orem senior Carter Walker had a big smile on his face when he went to accept his first-place medal in high jump at the 5A state track and field meet.

But what made him smile a little more?

The guys on his left and right.

Walker cleared a height of 6 feet, 5.5 inches to win the event, holding off teammates Cole Johnson and Ethan Stoddard (6-03.5) to help the Tigers pull away for the first-day lead at BYU's Robison Track and Field Complex.

"That was really cool," said Walker, who admits he had never been part of a top-three sweep atop the podium. "I was confident that my teammates would pull through, too. Hopefully we can hold on for the win."

Orem leads the 5A meet with 65 points, nearly 30 points up on second-place Lehi (35.5) and more than double third-place Mountain View (24). Box Elder (20) and Springville (17.5) round out the top five.

The Tigers also added first-place finishes in the 3,200-meter run through Tayson Echohawk's final time of 9 minutes, 12.52 seconds, and Mark Bryant added a first-place finish in the shot put at 60.05.50.

But the back-and-forth competition of the high jump put a bounce in Walker's step, and a previously high left him confidence in the field event win.

"It was a height for me that I had already cleared before," Walker said of his high mark. "I had a lot of confidence going in, and that helped me clear it."

Kennadee Vaughn had a final hurl of 39-04.00 in the shot put to help Box Elder to a first-day lead win the girls race. The Bees posted 28.5 points, holding off Mountain View (22), Skyline (18) and Timpview (22). Timpanogos (17) rounded out the top five.

Skyline’s Lily Boyden, center, wins the girls 100-meter race at the 5A track state championships at the Clarence F. Robison Outdoor Track and Field Complex in Provo, on Thursday, May 19, 2022.
