KEARNS — No. 1-seeded South Sevier put up a six-run sixth inning to come back from a 10-8 deficit against fifth-seeded Parowan to claim the 2A baseball title Saturday at Gates Field in Kearns.

The teams, both sporting a Rams mascot, met the day before in the semifinals, when South Sevier defeated Parowan 12-5 to move straight to the championship game and send the opposing Rams to the losers bracket, where they defeated Kanab 11-8 earlier Saturday morning.

It was a back-and-forth affair between the Rams all afternoon, with six lead changes and numerous ties throughout. Sevier took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the first, but Parowan fired back with a two-run RBI to take a 3-2 lead in the second.

Parowan began to fall apart a bit in the bottom of the second, giving up five runs on three hits in a South Sevier onslaught. Strike zone calls were a point of contention for fans and coaches all afternoon long, with Parowan's head coach receiving a warning for complaining in the third inning.

Parowan pitcher Matt Townsend carried over his strong performance from the earlier game in which he got two strikeouts in the seventh inning to seal the win. He pitched a shutout in the third inning against South Sevier, but was taken off for Connor Robison in the fourth. Parowan center fielder and Dixie State commit Shaydon Benson made a diving catch to help Townsend with the shutout in the third.

The bats came alive for Parowan in the fourth with a bases-loaded two-run RBI to cut the deficit to 7-5 with no outs. Another bases-loaded two-run RBI tied the game at 7. South Sevier briefly went up 8-7 in the bottom of the fourth before three base hits in a row and a Sevier error allowed Parowan to tie it back up at 8 in top of fifth. Parowan scored one more run to lead 9-8 and Robison got three strikeouts to hold Sevier scoreless in the fifth.

Parowan seemed to be in control up 10-8 after a balk in the top of the sixth, but then South Sevier decided to turn it up a notch. The Rams of South Sevier scored five-straight runs with no outs in the bottom of the sixth and put up six total runs in the inning to take a commanding 14-10 lead, leaving Parowan desperate heading into the final frame.

The game seemed to be headed for yet another tie when Parowan got a pair of RBIs with just one out on the board, but in the end it wasn't in the cards. South Sevier claimed the last two outs with relative ease and celebrated the state championship win in front of a raucous fan section that made the 171-mile drive to cheer on the top-seeded Rams.
